Background of the Study (400 words)
The integration of technology into healthcare education has become a significant factor in enhancing the training and skills development of healthcare professionals. Emergency nursing, which involves providing rapid and often life-saving care in high-pressure environments, requires specialized knowledge and practical skills. Technological advancements, such as simulation-based training, virtual learning platforms, and digital tools for patient monitoring, offer opportunities for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of emergency nursing training (Ademola & Faruk, 2023).
Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), located in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, is a leading institution in Nigeria known for its comprehensive health services and commitment to improving nursing practices. As the hospital continues to grow and advance, it faces the challenge of providing emergency nursing staff with training that meets the demands of an evolving healthcare environment. In recent years, BUTH has incorporated various technological tools to enhance nursing education and improve care delivery. However, the extent to which technology is integrated into emergency nursing training and its impact on the quality of training remains unclear.
This study aims to investigate the use of technology in emergency nursing training at Bowen University Teaching Hospital. It will explore the types of technological tools used, the methods of integration into training programs, and the perceived effectiveness of these technologies in enhancing the competencies of emergency nurses. This investigation will contribute to understanding the role of technology in modernizing nursing education, particularly in emergency care settings, and highlight potential areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Technological advancements have revolutionized many aspects of healthcare, including education and training. Despite this, there is limited research on how technology is being used in the training of emergency nurses in Nigerian hospitals. Bowen University Teaching Hospital, being a prominent healthcare institution, has the potential to lead in the incorporation of technology into emergency nursing education. However, there is insufficient data on how effectively technology is integrated into the training programs for emergency nurses and its impact on their clinical performance.
Emergency nursing requires a unique set of skills, including rapid decision-making, patient assessment, and the ability to handle critical situations. Technology, if utilized effectively, can enhance these skills by providing simulated environments, virtual platforms for learning, and tools for better patient monitoring and decision-making (Bello & Abubakar, 2024). The integration of these tools into nursing education could have significant implications for both nursing practice and patient outcomes.
This study will address this gap by investigating the extent to which technology is used in emergency nursing training at BUTH, the effectiveness of these technological tools, and the challenges faced by nursing educators and students in utilizing these tools. By doing so, it aims to contribute valuable insights to enhance nursing education in emergency settings.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the types of technology used in emergency nursing training at Bowen University Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the effectiveness of technology in enhancing emergency nurses’ clinical skills and decision-making.
3. To identify the challenges faced by emergency nursing educators and students in integrating technology into training.
Research Questions
1. What types of technology are used in emergency nursing training at Bowen University Teaching Hospital?
2. How effective is the use of technology in improving emergency nurses’ clinical skills and decision-making?
3. What challenges are encountered by emergency nursing educators and students in using technology during training?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of technology in emergency nursing training and the improvement of clinical skills.
2. H₀: The integration of technology does not significantly enhance emergency nurses’ decision-making abilities.
3. H₀: There are no significant challenges associated with the integration of technology in emergency nursing training at Bowen University Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the use of technology in emergency nursing training at Bowen University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from nursing educators and students, as well as challenges in measuring the direct impact of technology on clinical skills.
